Have I ever mentioned how much I hate Irene Adler?

Just…thought I’d get that off my chest.

norwegianpornfaerie: The whole "OMG CUMBERBATCH IS SO UGLY" disturbs me on quite a few levels. Yeah, sure, some of it is pre-teen "you're ugly"-insults, but the sheer level of vitriol and the details some people get into says a lot about the culture of beauty, the policing of people's bodies, and bullying. You have to wonder; if that's what people say about celebs in public, what do they say about their peers in private? Then, of course, there are the comments linking his appearance to his personality and actions...

YES. Most of the time I think it’s just kind of amusing and ridiculous, because I am not Benedict and I can’t really take any personal offence in what they say.

It’s just. The fact that there is an entire tag dedicated to criticising his appearance [and not his personality or actions].
The fact that some people think or pretend to think those things are somehow connected.
The fact that I discovered how the post I reblogged was tagged under ‘ugly actors’.
The fact that there is a tag called ‘ugly actors’.
The amount of effort and detail people put into describing how much an actor’s general appearance disturbs them.
The fact that his appearance disturbs them to the point where they feel like they have to repeatedly let the Internet know about it.
The fact that “pointing out white, male privilege” is reduced to talking about how ugly people are finding a specific white, male actor.

I’m just tired.

Benedict Cumberbatch is the ugliest actor I have ever seen. His very image offends me more than you can imagine. If you took a foot and drew a face on it, you would get a spitting image of this guy. Actually, the foot would probably look better than him!

His face fills me with rage, confusion,…

I can’t stop laughing :’)

You know OP, it’s just a face.

Joking about how something has made or is going to make you start suffering from a mental disorder is not an okay way to illustrate your reaction to anything.

I like the tag under the last one; it’s like Treklock is their mate and they are confiding in them that they are going to commit homicide.

Also, I wonder if people even realise that I only take what they say at face value to tease them for talking about things like crossovers and AUs as if they were terrible matters of life and death.

Because so far that does not seem to have gotten all the way through.

Oh don’t tire yourself trying to educate Treklock fans on how the film industry works, it’s clearly a lost cause.

I bet they won’t even understand your wish to die. They probably just think you are trivialising suicide in an attempt to be witty or something.

I know it’s so fucking annoying and they take everything way too seriously like jeez guys calm down

God, I feel you so much. Like since when is suicide something serious? Pfft.

OK, two things in regards to this.

1: Having characters do problematic things does not in itself make a show problematic. I keep seeing this in regard to BBC!Sherlock’s behavior, the argument going something like “the protagonist is sexist/racist/whatever, ergo the show condones it!” Which, of course, is not a given. Likewise, Elementary!Sherlock being sexist/racist/whatever does not mean that Elementary as a show is any of those things, nor that it condones it.

That said:

2: I’m seeing a lot of “oh, that’s just his sense of humor” being thrown around to explain/condone Elementary!Sherlock’s problematic behavior, which I find troubling. I know that’s not what you’re doing here, Mod, (rather, I’m assuming you wanted to point out what I’ve done above) but you reminded me of it.

(IMHO, a character who thinks this sort of joke is funny is, to me, much worse than a character who would make that assumption. But YMMV. And again, this says nothing about the agenda of the show.)

1. Completely agreed. And while Elementary isn’t perfect I’d like to give it particular credit for having Joan repeatedly call out other characters’ sexist remarks.

2. Yes. Yes, I’m sorry if it came across that way to someone else. It is his sense of humour as a character, but that does in no way excuse the behaviour.

What a crossover is: a work of art or fiction that incorporates characters from two separate stories into one.

What a crossover is not: something made by someone who doesn’t know that actors play different characters in different things.

Do I even need to specify which character this is regarding?

Oh, Sally Donovan tag. How you make me laugh and cry at the same time. Look: Women can have motivations for disliking men that are not related to:

  • Having dated them
  • Wanting to date them
  • Having been rejected by them
  • Being in unrequited love with them
  • Being attracted to them
  • Not being attracted to them

In fact, women can have a virtual cornucopia of reasons for disliking individual men that have absolutely nothing to do with sexuality, dating, romance or attraction!

bennaddict1987: I feel I should clarify my last submission (been thinking about it and unless I'm overanalysing I came to this conclusion). With the friend insinuating that sleeping with Sherlock was part of Joan's job (what she gets paid for) he's insinuating she's a prostitute. I may be overanalysing it but that scene sounds very problematic for people who say that "elementary" is a show that's pro-feminism...

Let us keep in mind that the person who paid the man to make said insinuation and actually orchestrated the whole meeting, was Sherlock himself. And as mentioned in some of the reblogs of the submission, that is kind of just his sense of humour. But I see where you’re coming from. And if anything it was super intrusive and just generally rude from an outside perspective. (However, still not comparable to queerbaiting.)

Anonymous: Why does the previous anon think that there's queer-baiting with Joan Watson on Elementary? I know I tend to miss implications about non-canon ships when I watch TV, but, um... what?

There are a couple of instances and they are slightly debatable, but here is a post discussing them!

Anonymous: Elementary has its own issues, including queerbaiting with Joan (I'll be honest, the RDJ movies take the queerbaiting cake, with BBC Sherlock second in Holmes adaptations but not in shows in general.) Elementary's issues are just rarely discussed, I assume, out of fear. I've seen people try to mention problems and get immediately shit on. But I see that same trend in so many fandoms now, it's not an issue limited to Elementary or Sherlock.

This.

Sometimes I feel like (some of) the fans of series like Elementary or Hannibal or you name it pride themselves on being “less problematic than…” instead of actually addressing the issues in their own fandoms/TV series, and making them known the same way the ones in say…Superwholock are being displayed (which is good; I’m not saying they shouldn’t be).

I mean I often see this sort of “well we’re still not worse than the Sherlock fandom so it doesn’t matter” attitude and I find that pretty damaging (and childish). The point isn’t to compare; the point is to acknowledge things that are not okay and make an effort to change them.

Anonymous: Hi, sorry I did sent the second part of that ask last night, but my phone must not have sent it properly. Anyway, I find it rediculous that I cant express any opinion that come accross as negetive about Elementary without its fans throwing the whole sexist/mysogynistic/racist thing in my face (even when it doesmt concern Joan). And as an Asian woman myself, I find it rediculous, because those words are thrown around so much nowadays that they have lost all their meaning!

Don’t worry about it. Thank you for adding the rest!

I do understand what you guys mean when you say that the words have lost their meaning, but I just want to throw in that this obviously doesn’t mean we can ignore them when they are being used legitimately, or assume that they don’t mean anything just because people often throw them around where they don’t belong. Otherwise yeah, it is super ridiculous.
